A TOPP-Notch Oviedo gathering despite torrent

Though the rain kept many people inside the evening of June 16th, nearly two dozen supporters of The Oviedo Preservation Project (TOPP) braved the storm to celebrate native plants and home-grown cooks at Sweetwater Park in Oviedo.

Nichole Towell and Donna Duda of Duda Farm Fresh Foods joined the group for a special presentation honoring Citrus and Celery Cook-Off chefs whose recipes had been selected to appear on Duda brand packaging. Duda Farm Fresh Foods was the Cook-Off’s sponsor this year at Taste of Oviedo.

Recipes selected included those of Roberta McQueen (Grapefruit Chicken Cordon Bleu), Bonnie Banda (A Very Yummy Salad), Gloria Dunmire (Cheesy Celery Crisps), Karen Willoughby (Crunchy Celery Salad), Debbie McLaughlin (Mom’s Pork Chop & Potato Bake), Cynthia Simonton (Grapefruit Spinach Salad), and Becky Morgan (Celery Soup). Winners received a certificate noting their accomplishment, and a medal.

But even those who didn’t earn awards went home will full hands. Everyone present went recieved a reusable grocery bag and a ball cap featuring Dandy Dude, a spunky skateboarding Clementine.

“The hat made showing up in the rain worth it,” said a soaked and smiling Paul Sladek. Especially endearing are the words on the back of the cap, “Clementines... sweet and easy to peel.”

While the goodies were a hit, others thought the gardening tips offered by Neta Villalobos-Bell were the highlight of the evening. The head of the Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program for Seminole County, Neta had gathered clippings of edible native plants from the meeting site. Included among them was elberberry and elderflower – both grow wild throughout Oviedo and both can be eaten.

June’s meeting was Bob Saunders’ first. He came in hopes of learning more about developing a community garden in partnership with First United Methodist Church of Oviedo. “We’d like to grow vegetables and donate them to the local food pantry,” he said.

Because of the rain, the hands-on portion of the meeting will be rescheduled for late July. Then, native gardening enthusiasts will plant Seminole Pumpkin seeds for anticipated harvest in November. The Seminole Pumpkin is a variety of hard squash that is native to Seminole County. It has especially orange flesh and a hard white shell. TOPP is tax-exempt, non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Oviedo’s distinctive feel. Its June meeting always focuses on good stewardship of natural resources, which is a natural aspect of its mission to preserve Oviedo’s distinctive character. The group has mobilized over $150,000 to help Oviedo since its inception in 2003.

Annual Photography Contest:
TOPP’s annual photography contest is in progress right now, and you can be a part of it. Winning photographs of historic Oviedo locations will receive not only a cash prize, but also publication in the 2010 Preservation Calendar, which will be distributed to 7,000 households. Sponsored by Citizens Bank of Florida and other local businesses, this is the 5th calendar TOPP will publish to pass out for free.

Pictures are due in by Friday, Aug. 28, and this year’s theme is “Off the Beaten Path.” All structures and landmarks in Oviedo, Chuluota, Geneva, and surrounding areas that are 50 years in age or older are eligible.

Annual Cemetery Tour:
Tales of civil war, suicide, celery, snakes, and other surprising scenarios will be center stage at The Oviedo Preservation Project’s Fourth Annual Cemetery Tour. This free event will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Oviedo Cemetery (across from Oviedo High School on S.R. 426).

The public is welcome to join us for an hour-long visit with some of Oviedo’s founders. We’ll be touring the cemetery under the guidance of three of Oviedo’s founders, back for a visit from the other side. Join us to hear stories from actors in costume who will tell about themselves and about what Oviedo was like when they were alive.
