Oviedo Police now notifying parents of teens in traffic violations

This summer, to promote safe driving and reduce teen traffic crashes, Oviedo Police will continue to ensure that parents are told how the family car is being operated when teens are driving on their own. Each year, thousands of young drivers are killed in traffic crashes across the country—hundreds of thousands more are injured. Young inexperienced drivers are involved in fatal traffic crashes at over twice the rate of the rest of the population.

Since last August, when Oviedo Police stop 16 or 17-year old drivers for traffic violations the teen drivers’ parents are notified whether or not a traffic ticket is issued. Started locally in Oviedo at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, this program has been well received by parents as a tool to ensure that young drivers do not hide dangerous driving practices and traffic violations.

Oviedo Police now have been joined by other agencies in Seminole County in calling the parents of teenage drivers about traffic violations whether the stop results in a verbal warning, a written warning or a traffic citation. When parents are not contacted by telephone a written notice is mailed. Parents who do not speak directly to the officer the day of the traffic stop can call the agency to get more information. Mailed notices include suggestions to parents about setting good driving examples themselves and imposing restrictions on where, when and with whom their teens are allowed to drive.

The teen traffic safety parental notification program is a courtesy to parents that allows them to cooperate with law enforcement to safeguard young drivers and to stop poor driving behavior that could result in injury or death. Combined with existing law enforcement programs to stop underage alcohol sales, to openly discuss substance abuse and to reduce underage drinking, parental notifications are designed to help parents know when their teens’ unsupervised activities are unlawful or dangerous.

This summer, teen drivers are on notice that parents and police officers are talking.

Poor driving could result in the keys to the family car being taken away. So teens are getting the message: always wear your seat belt, slow down and drive like your life depends on it—or you might not have anything to drive.

Good deal! Parents should be aware of how their teens are driving around. Unless we are actually in the car with them; how else would we know? Even if we were riding with them, at that time they would be on their best behavior I'm sure.

I often see students from a certain high school who, even though there is a traffic light, will speed up and pull out right in front of you. Too many accidents are the result of inattention and talking and texting on a cell phone is one of the main reasons attention to driving safely is not observed.

Maybe this message from the Oviedo Police Department will save a life or two or three, etc. Good job!
