TJ's Seafood Shack in Oviedo serves up great food
TJ's Seafood Shack seemed to be doing well since its opening mid-November. The inside was filled to capacity when we arrived. Luckily, Oviedo's weather was at its best, so we were able to sit at one of their outside tables. This meant we couldn't enjoy TJ's fun beach decor while we ate, but the sun and cool breeze were welcome substitutes. Themed music plays inside as well as out on the patio, adding to the relaxed seaside ambiance.
What we ate
Hush puppies: $2.25

Spicy Gumbo: $3.25
Louisiana style with chicken and sausage, served with hushpuppies
Tijuana Fish Tacos: $7.95
3 flour tortillas with fried or blackened fish, topped with lettuce, tomato and cilantro salsa. Served with black beans and rice.
Sweet Potato Fries: $3.75
What we thought
The Hush puppies came to our table immediately and were crispy, warm, and sweetened with drizzled honey. They are too much for one, and we recommend sharing between two or three. The Spicy Gumbo was flavorful, but we didn't think it had enough kick. For something with "spicy" in its name, it was a disappointment. If you are looking for spice, pick something else. If you are craving a mild gumbo, go for it! The highlight of the meal was the Tijuana Fish Tacos. We thought the option between fried or blackened was accommodating, and chose to get ours blackened. The fish was light, fresh, and well cooked. Because of this, the whole dish shined above the rest of the meal. The Sweet Potato Fries came in a large basket with some sweet mustard sauce. For some dishes, they can be substituted in lieu of french fries for a small price; the benefits justify the cost. Everyone at TJ's was friendly, from the cashier to the servers who brought our food and checked up on us. We even noticed one of the servers helping an elderly couple by letting them order from their table, even though customers are supposed to order and pay at the register before sitting down. This might have brought tears to our eyes if we weren't already stuffing our faces with hush puppies.
Would we come back
Yes. This was our first time at TJ's Seafood Shack, and we will be back for round two in the near future. We already have our eyes on the Lobster Salad Rolls and Maryland Style Crab Cakes. If those options prove to be as delicious as the fish tacos, TJ's might become our regular lunch spot. See you there!

TJ's Seafood is a great place! The food is awesome, great prices, comfortable ambiance, and Tim and Mary are wonderful people. It's about time Oviedo gets a local hangout!!! If you haven't been there, YOU are missing out on a great time with great food and cold beer!!!!

Owners did seem nice. I'll definitely go back, but the food on my first visit (blackened grouper) didn't seem all that fresh. Worthy of another shot, though.
